Cube Optics - Fiber Optical Transport Solutions

About Cube Optics

A brief history – key milestones

2000 The early beginnings

Cube Optics AG was founded as a high-technology start-up in Mainz, Germany, in 2000. The idea behind the company was a revolutionary concept to miniaturize passive optical multiplexing. In 2001 the original Color Cube was presented to the world and was more than 100 times smaller than the average passive optical multiplexers available at the time. That year Cube Optics also received the award as “Germany’s Best StartUp” by McKinsey, Sparkasse (German Savings Bank) and the newsmagazine Stern.

Cube Optics initially focused on designing and making passive fiber-optical components for OEM customers, addressing applications in telecommunications, data centers but also in various industrial areas such as sensing, bio science, oil & gas exploration, defense and marine.

CUBO's devices are based on a proprietary packaging process of optical sub-elements on a microscopic scale capabilities:

The base of our components is the patented Polymer Optical Bench (POB) which is manufactured by micro injection molding and contains integrated high-precision alignment structures. Due to these alignment structures we make use of a passive, Lego-like assembly of various optical sub-elements to build the device. This not only gives rise to the smallest, Telcordia qualified components and a modular integration of features but also enables lowest-cost prices for our products.

2004 The first optical transport solutions

In 2004 CUBO started to also provide full transport solutions for metro reach applications to network operators and carriers. We partner with Enterprises, ISPs and Utilities to major tier 1 Telcos in nation wide rollouts. We support them to build their 5G networks, Fiber-To-The-Home/Building, Data Center Interconnects and many more communication networks.

Hence our product range includes wavelength division multiplexers, splitters, switches, highly integrated optical devices (e.g. 4 channel ROSA), as well as rack-mountable, carrier-grade passive and active transport systems.

2014 Becoming HUBER+SUHNER

After its strong growth Cube Optics was acquired in 2014 by HUBER+SUHNER AG, a Swiss corporation with global representation. Cube Optics to date remains as a separate business unit within the HUBER+SUHNER Communications segment. As such, Cube Optics' R&D and engineering centers are located in Mainz and Barcelona, Spain. The same applies to the production lines which are located in Mainz, where the knowhow for all technologies, processes and products are. In addition to this, Cube Optics also uses the HUBER+SUHNER sister entities around the globe and as well as contract manufacturers to benefit from large scale and low cost manufacturing.

2018 Space to continue to grow

In 2018 Cube Optics moved into the new headquarters building in Mainz, Germany. In addition to the 3 floors of open office spaces, the top floor of the office building is the meeting and showroom area.

Right next to the office building is the production building with the clean room for the components manufacturing, the assembly and test area for the active and passive products and last but not least warehouse and logistics.

This additional space was necessary to sustain Cube Optics' continuous growth.
